Tips to start a new habit

Have you ever felt like you want to make life changes but don’t know where to start? That’s okay! New habits can be really hard to stick to. “If you don’t know where to start, start somewhere!”

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Make a list!

Get your ideas out of your head! Writing them down will help you visualize exactly what you need or want to do. There are many different ways to make a list. It doesn’t necessarily have to be in chronological order, as long as it makes sense to you. No matter which way you choose to make a list, make sure you can cross off each item as you complete it! That way, you give yourself many small successes along the way.

Some options:

Writing on a notepad

Writing on a whiteboard

Typing in Sticky Note on your computer

Using a list app on your phone/tablet

Typing in Notes on your phone/tablet

Stick to it!

Try to incorporate this new habit into your life for 3-4 weeks. Write yourself little reminders throughout your day to stay on track. Try holding yourself accountable by recruiting a friend/family member to help you stay on track, whether its weekly check-ins or daily texts.

Give yourself room for error!

No one is perfect. Starting a new habit is hard and you’re bound to make mistakes. If you skip your routine or completely forget one day, its okay! Just make sure that you continue working towards your goal at the next opportunity.

Reward yourself!

Find little ways to reward yourself along the way when you stay on track. That might mean each time you follow your new routine, every day, or at the end of the week. Rewards help you to feel successful even though you may not have reached the end goal yet.
