Turmeric – What’s the hype about?

I’m sure by now you’ve seen turmeric popping up all over the place – in recipes, on menus, and even in lattes. Turmeric is a spice that is commonly used across India. (It’s that spice that gives curry it’s color.) So why is it getting such a big name in the states now? Keep reading!

There are many health benefits to having a turmeric supplement in your daily diet (such as those listed below). However, the beneficial compound in turmeric is actually called curcumin. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. The kicker is that this inflammation warrior is typically poorly absorbed into our bodies on its own. That’s why you’ll often see black pepper extract as an ingredient in curcumin supplements; it helps the body to absorb the curcumin. It’s important to note that in order for your body to really benefit from ingesting turmeric, you should be taking 500-1,000mg of curcuminoids per day.

The benefits:

  • Curcumin is known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties. It fights chronic inflammation at a molecular level. This is very helpful for those who live with arthritis as this is a disease that causes inflamed joints.
  • Curcumin has antioxidants that help our bodies to fight free radicals. It also has the ability to assist the body’s own antioxidant enzymes.
  • Studies show curcumin can lower the risk of brain diseases, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, and may help prevent cancer.

So while all these new turmeric lattes, teas, coconut butters, and facemasks look cool, they’re not quite beneficial due to the low amount of curcumin that is actually in these products. But hey, every little bit helps!
